Through the keyhole into a living wonderland

A house steeped in history designed with Alice in Wonderland lens.

A Happy New Year to you! We hope you are well rested and enjoyed your time off. As the year starts, we have hit the ground running with few weeks away from finishing London’s first residential design house, a four-storey Neo Jacobean masterpiece that redefines what a period home can be. Restored and designed by Irenie Studio, this 1840s Grade II listed home in De Beauvoir Town is a space of discovery, wonder, and creativity.

A house with a story to tell

Built in the 1840s, On the Square’s Neo Jacobean design captures the grandeur of its time, with intricate details and architectural flourishes that give a sense of mystery and charm. The detail throughout the house truly executes a living document of craftsmanship, housing intricate window detailing and a front facade that not many could pass by without stopping. Irenie Studio has embraced this history, preserving the home’s essence while adding playful modernity into its spaces.

Alice, is that you?

Who is Alice you say? ”Through the looking glass“ from Alice in Wonderland has been at the heart of this project from day dot, with the windows and apertures of the house holding such foundational stories. Irenie has developed a design language that will be carried through out the house:

  • Play with scale:

Oversized and miniature design elements, reimagining the proportions of a traditional home.

  • Illusions of space:

Unexpected thresholds and secret reveals blur the line between reality and reverie.

  • Threshold stories:

Every doorway, passage, and corner invites us in, telling a tale to everyone who walks through the doors.

Irenie Cossey, the visionary behind the project, shares:

“The building'sunique features and restrictions became opportunities to create something magical. Its light, shadows, and details invite us to reimagine the space in ways that surprise and delight at every turn.”

Irenie Cossey

From the rich history of De Beauvoir Town to the design surprises waiting to be revealed, this is just the beginning. Stay tuned for more stories and behind-the-scenes glimpses.
